Setting Sail began as part of my exploration into immersive and instillation art, throughout the project ‘Gaia’.

I wanted to explore ways of creating large scale, land-based, instillation art through the use of waste materials. The initial idea was to create a large painted piece from old sailcloth which would be strung up between trees to form a canopy. The project picked up momentum and scale when a friend offered me their old working sail, and the use of their boat…which changed the course of the project.

With a new direction in mind, I set out to design an eye catching sail which would symbolise the relationship between people, nature, and the ocean.
